Jason Sheroan…

So many thoughts, so little time!

Crossroads Community Church

I am a regular worship team member at Crossroads, contributing where I’m needed. I’m usually asked to sing “special” songs, play lead guitar, bass, and sometimes drums. I LOVE the drums, but I’m not a drummer.

Our songs are pulled from a master song list, just like a cover band. We typically do a rotation from a primary batch of song so they are familar to the congregation. When we bring in new songs, we do it slowly, making sure to repeat them until the congregation knows them well.

Since my primary role is lead guitar and bass i’m very familiar with those parts. But it’s tough to jump on the drums and nail the songs. I’m usually very familiar with the song, but it does nothing for the execution! That’s where owning a kit would help. The best thing I can do is know the transitions, dynamics, and keep things basic.

We film all of our services to offer DVD’s and CD’s. The focus of those videos during the music set are the vocalists, with random shots of the band. The only way for me to get footage of myself playing is to specifically record myself. The only time I’ve ever done this happened to be when I played the drums. Since there are no amps on stage, you can’t really hear the rest of the band. That’s OK with me because I simply wanted a reference for myself to learn from.

I’m probably crazy for putting these clips on Youtube, but I wanted to show family members and friends that I can sorta play the drums. Maybe one of these days soon I’ll put up some video of guitar, bass, or vocals.
